Federal Tax Clinic

University of South Dakota Knudson School of Law offers a federal tax clinic providing free legal representation to low-income people in disputes with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) while allowing law students to practice tax law.

Services

  • Assisting with an audit or helping to obtain an audit reconsideration
  • Filing a U.S. tax court petition or appearing in U.S. tax court on your behalf
  • Preparing a settlement offer to settle a tax debt
  • Requesting a stay in collections
  • Helping to settle tax debts through the IRS Offer in Compromise program

There are no attorney fees for our services, although you may have to pay any actual costs associated with your case, such as court filing fees and costs for filing certain forms with the IRS.

The clinic can also help taxpayers respond to IRS notices and correct account problems. We will first determine whether you meet income guidelines and other criteria before agreeing to represent you.

The WORKS Clinic

The WORKS CLINIC is free and provides Forms and Mediation Aid for Divorcing Couples who qualify. It's made possible by the collaborative efforts of the University of South Dakota Knudson School of Law, the South Dakota State Bar Foundation, the South Dakota Bar Association ADR Committee, and the UJS First, Second & Seventh Circuit Courts.

The purpose of the clinic is to help self-represented couples and families within the First, Second, and Seventh South Dakota Circuit Court Areas who have income within 200% of Federal Poverty Guidelines to fill out the necessary UJS Forms when filing for divorce.

While WORKS CLINIC is held in person on selected dates in Vermillion, Rapid City, and Sioux Falls, most meetings will be held online using Zoom.

Those who qualify for the program and wish to participate, should call to set an appointment for a WORKS CLINIC. Before you contact WORKS, please check the Participant Eligibility qualifications listed below, and read through the What to Expect information.

Participants will need to make arrangements to provide a translator if one is needed.
